Shutdown XP Quicker
June 26, 2008
I recently noticed that my Windows XP shutdown sequence was starting to take longer and longer. My OS install isn’t that old, but I like to add lots of programs to my system. This clogged things up a bit and I forgot the regedit tricks to speed things up. After some Google searching I found the following instructions (modified to fit my blog space).
Open REGEDIT and navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value & set it to ‘1000′
Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value & set it to ‘1000′
Open REGEDIT and navigate to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value & set it to ‘1000′
Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value & set it to ‘1000′
Open REGEDIT and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control
Highlight the value ‘WaitToKillServiceTimeout’ & set it to ‘1000′
Open REGEDIT and navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Highlight the value ‘AutoEndTasks’ & set it to ‘1′

Regedit on my system does not have “waitokillservice…..” of any kind. The only file under desktop is “windowmetrics”.
